Why is the deposit system being introduced in Austria?

PET and aluminium are important recyclables: however, in Austria currently only around 70% of all PET bottles are collected after use and returned to the recycling cycle. The collection target of 90% must be reached by 2027.

The deposit system enables the high-quality recycling of containers so that the recyclate can be used for new PET bottles and aluminium cans.

At the same time, the discarding of single-use drinks containers as litter is avoided, i.e. the thoughtless disposal of waste in the environment.
